A major cleanliness and anti-plastic campaign was held at Chowpatty on the occasion of World Environment Day 2025. The campaign, aimed to raise awareness about the harmful effects of single-use plastic and promote sustainable alternatives, was led by Maharashtra Environment and Climate Change Minister Pankaja Munde.

The initiative was jointly organised by the Department of Environment and Climate Change, the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The event witnessed the participation from college students, civic sanitation workers, and local residents.

Munde, along with MPCB Chairman Siddhesh Kadam and Member Secretary Dr Avinash Dhakne, took part in a cleanliness inspection at the beach alongside BMC workers.

“We must say no to single-use plastic and completely stop its usage. Efforts are underway to find alternatives and repurpose such plastic. Several trusts and organisations are supporting this cause,” said Minister Munde, adding that public awareness campaigns are currently underway at religious places, hospitals, and pharmacies across the state.

The drive is part of a larger campaign launched by the department and MPCB on May 22, aiming to make Maharashtra free from single-use plastic. Awareness was also raised around other environmental themes including tree plantation and conservation, water saving, adopting eco-friendly alternatives like solar energy and cycling, and encouraging the use of cloth bags over plastic.

Street plays were performed by various institutions to spread the message of plastic reduction. Volunteers from Muktai Solid Waste Management Service Institute, students of Joshi-Bedekar College, and other academic bodies contributed by cleaning the beach and chanting slogans to mobilise public support.
