The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai and some parts of Maharashtra including Thane, and Palghar districts over the Independence Day 2025 weekend.

According to a weather bulletin issued on Wednesday by the Regional Meteorological Centre in Mumbai, "heavy rainfall was expected in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad and Ratnagiri on August 16 and 17."

An orange alert was issued for Raigad, Ratnagiri, ghats of Pune, Kolhapur and Satara for August 16 and 17.

According to the IMD, light to moderate rains were likely in Mumbai on Friday, August 15 and continue through the weekend.

A yellow alert means there is a possibility of weather that may cause some disruption to the citizens.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, the IMD predicted that Mumbai was expected to witness a generally cloudy sky on Wednesday, with moderate rainfall and the possibility of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning across the city and suburbs, according to the weather department.

The IMD's Santacruz observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 31.6 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 25.9 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the Colaba observatory reported a high of 31.6 degrees Celsius and a low of 24.9 degrees Celsius, as per the latest Mumbai weather updates.

A high tide was expected at 2:26 pm with a height of 4.48 meters, while the low tide will occur at 8:35 pm at 0.74 meters.

For Thursday, August 14, 2025, the high tide was expected to hit Mumbai seashores at 3:02 am with a height of 4.17 meters, and the low tide was expected at 8:35 am at 1.31 meters.

The civic authorities have advised residents, particularly those in low-lying areas, to remain cautious during high tide hours in view of the rain forecast.

With heavy rains in past weeks, the water levels in lakes supplying drinking water to Mumbai have risen following heavy rainfall in their catchment areas.

According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data, the combined stock in the seven reservoirs that provide water to the city now stands at 89.21 per cent.

As per the BMC on Wednesday (August 13), the collective water stock in these reservoirs is 12,91,129 million litres, which amounts to 89.21 per cent of their total capacity.

The BMC supplies drinking water daily from Upper Vaitarna, Modak Sagar, Tansa, Middle Vaitarna, Bhatsa, Vihar, and Tulsi lakes.
