Two neighbours of an HSC student have been arrested on charges of gang-raping her, but there remain several unanswered questions in the case.
The two arrested men had allegedly barged into the girl's home around noon on Saturday and forced themselves on her.
On the basis of the girl's complaint, the police in Bhosari arrested Sachin Anand Awghade (27) and Shivaji Bharat Gaikwad (22), both residents of Phugewadi.
The incident took place at Devak Chawl in Phugewadi.
Since the crime took place in a crowded area, residents of Bhosari are now wondering whether girls in the city are at all safe, especially since no one came to help the victim upon hearing her cries.
False accusation?
Amid all this, insiders say the girl was having an affair with one of the accused and lodged a complaint of rape against him and his friend when their affair came to light.
"We have registered a complaint of rape on the basis of the victim's statement," Senior Police Inspector Sudhir Aspat said.
The police said the girl was on her own at home when she was gang-raped. Investigating officers said the girl's parents returned home in the evening and found her trembling with fear. She then revealed that the two men living next door had forced themselves on her. Her parents took her to the nearest police station to lodge a complaint.
The police said the girl might have let the two men in since she knew them.
The girl's father works with a city jeweller, while her mother works with a housekeeping agency.
The girl was sent to Sassoon General Hospital for medical examination. The medical report is awaited.
