A four-day-old baby girl was found dead in the dried part of the riverbed near the Kasba Peth pumping station in Mangalwar Peth.

The police said the infant died as a result of pigeons eating its eyes.

Rajesh Damodar Kachi (42), a resident of Shivajinagar, noticed the dead infant lying near the river on Friday evening and alerted the Shivajinagar police.

Case registered
The Shivajinagar police have registered a case under Section 318 (concealment of birth by secret disposal of dead body).

Assistant police sub-inspector R J Ghadge, who is investigating the case, said, "Some person left the infant immediately after it was born. Kachi informed the police control room about the abandoned infant, after which police reached the spot."

The officer said the post-mortem suggested the cause of death was an attack on the baby's eyes by pigeons.

"The baby girl was found to be four-days-old and had died because some pigeons had eaten its eyes," said Ghadge. "We are now enquiring in nearby areas, hospitals and clinics about women who had delivered babies in the last week. Once we get this information, we can find out who is responsible for the act."
