92 failures pass exams after re-evaluation!

As many as 92 students who were led to believe they had failed can breathe easy now 82 HSC students and 10 SSC students who had earlier scored failing grades were declared passed by the board after their answer sheets were evaluated To add to these figures a whopping 445 HSC and 209 SSC studentsrsquo papers have returned with increased marksWhile the change in scores is certainly good news for the students mdash many of whom will now qualify for the colleges of their choice mdash the high number of changed results has alarmed others raising questions about the accuracy of the boardrsquos evaluation processPic for representationState board officials however have reacted quite nonchalantly saying the numbers should not be a cause for concern ldquoSee one has to compare these figures with the total number of students who appeared for the exam From Pune division over one lakh students each appear for SSC and HSC exams So this one or two per cent deviation can be registered in reevaluationrdquo Krishnakumar Patil secretary of the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education MSBSHSE said to middayAdmission confusionWhile officials remain unperturbed the change in grades has affected even those who have benefited from it Tanmay Lalvani is happy that his percentage has increased from the earlier 93 to 942 per cent after reevaluation but admission problems persist His father Vijay said that the improved marks mean Tanmay now qualifies for a seat at his desired institute mdash Fergusson College FC ldquoWe have applied to the Centralised Admission Process CAP and are now waiting for admission to FC But in the first round of admissions we had to confirm Abasaheb Garware College So now after getting approval from CAP we have to first cancel our earlier admission and only then will Tanmay get admission at FCrdquo Vijay said He added ldquoIf the board had given us the reevaluated result within 15 days we would have been able to claim better seats in the online admission round itself But we received the result after almost a monthrdquo The story is similar with several other students who have had to wait weeks for fresh results while the three online rounds of centralised admissions to Standard XI have passed them by In fact there are still several who are yet to receive their new results Of the 920 students who applied for rechecking after the result declaration on June 17 358 have still not received their scores And of the 1358 who had demanded a complete reevaluation as many as 110 are still waiting for photocopies of their answer sheets which is only the first step in the process The number of pending HSC results however is comparatively low Only 8 of the original 1797 that had asked for rechecks have not been informed of their marks And of the 304 who had asked for reevaluation 46 await their new marks The state boardrsquos Pune division secretary Pushpalata Pawar said ldquoWe are trying our best to issue reevaluation and rechecking results as early as possible One of the reasons for pending results is that many students who had applied have still not collected their revised results or answer sheet photocopiesrdquoIn the past few days the CAP committee has received three applications from students who hope to get seats in better colleges with their increased marks Considering the large number of students who are receiving increased marks or have recently passed the number of admission requests will only increaseCAP Chairperson and Deputy Director of Education Suman Shinde has said that all students whose SSC scores increase after board reevaluation will be eligible to ask for fresh admission based on their revised marks ldquoWe have appealed to students to apply through the ongoing offline admission process Even if a student receives his reevaluation result after the Std XI admission process gets over we will ensure that he or she will get a seat in a junior college on the basis of their merit and that collegersquos cutoff marksrdquo she said However she refused to comment on the boardrsquos delay in issuing results Meanwhile Patil has said that every college evaluates the papers based on instructions from the state board He added that if the board notices particular colleges where results have changed dramatically the cases will be assessed746Number of students who received increased marks after the HSCSSC reevaluation process
