Migrants' issues get a new impetus through a series of film screenings and discussions by the PSBT that starts today

More than 175 million people have crossed transnational boundaries to reside in countries that are not their birthplace. It's no wonder, then, that migration remains one of the most talked about subjects of all times. Organised by the Public Service Broadcast Trust (PSBT), the film festival, Making Migrant - Dialogues Through Film, gives an insight into the roots of shifting masses. Here's a foretaste.

Sending out a message

The movies expose the veracities of human trafficking, missing migrants, intersections of race and the approach of some states to hold migrants under different situations. Don't miss the masterpieces of eminent film personalities Dai-Sil Kim Gibson (A Forgotten People), Savyasaachi Jain (Dur Kinare), Ursula Biemann (Sahara Chronicle and X-Mission) and Ali Kazimi (Continuous Journey).

"My film is about a group of men from Punjab, who are smuggled to Europe. Human smuggling is as big a trade as drug smuggling, and those behind it are cold-blooded individuals for whom human life is just like any other lifeless commodity," said Savyasaachi Jain, director of Dur Kinare.

Debates and discussions

All the screenings will be complemented by discussions with academicians, thinkers and activists, including Sir Mark Tully, professor Achin Vanaik, Dr Nivedita Menon, Dr Prabhu Mohapatra and Professor Shohini Ghosh, among others.
