AIIMS Nagpur doctors demand action after colleague allegedly assaulted in ICU

Resident doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences AIIMS Nagpur staged a demonstration on Thursday to condemn the alleged assault of a junior resident doctor and demanded stronger measures to protect medical staffThe Resident Doctors Association RDA AIIMS Nagpur also called for an end to what it described as VIP culture at the institute claiming that patients and their relatives often seek preferential treatment by producing letters from politicians or attempting to intimidate hospital staffDoctors demand lsquono special treatmentrsquo policyDuring the protest resident doctors displayed placards carrying slogans including Stop VIP culture No safety no duty and Stop violence against doctorsIn a letter addressed to the Executive Director of AIIMS Nagpur the RDA demanded that the institute adopt a no special treatment policy to ensure that patients are treated according to established procedures without external influenceThe association also demanded that the institute itself file complaints in cases involving attacks or violence against doctors and healthcare workersDoctor allegedly assaulted inside ICUAccording to the police case a resident doctor at AIIMS Nagpur was allegedly attacked by four people inside the intensive care unit ICU on TuesdayThe alleged assault took place following the death of a relative during treatment at the hospitalThe four accused were identified as Tejpal Singh Uday Singh Shubham Singh and Sumedh SinghA case was registered against them under provisions of the Maharashtra Medicare Service Persons and Medicare Service Institutions Prevention of Violence and Damage or Loss to Property ActThe doctorsrsquo association has demanded the immediate arrest of those allegedly involved in the assaultRDA raises concern over political influenceThe RDA claimed that the accused in the present case had invoked the name of a politicianThe association said such incidents reinforce the need for a policy under which no patient or attendant receives special treatment based on political or other external influenceThe demonstration was aimed at highlighting concerns over the safety of resident doctors and demanding institutional action against violence at the workplaceThe doctorsrsquo association maintained that healthcare workers should be able to perform their duties without facing threats or physical attacksThrough its representation to the AIIMS administration the RDA sought measures to prevent similar incidents and called for a formal institutional mechanism for filing complaints when medical staff are assaultedThe protest comes amid the associationrsquos demand for stronger protection for doctors and an end to preferential treatment within the hospital systemWith inputs from PTI
