Amit Shah to introduce Bill granting 'Vande Mataram' same legal protection as National Anthem

Union Home Minister Amit Shah will introduce the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026 in the Rajya Sabha on the first day of the Monsoon Session. The proposed law seeks to extend the same legal protection enjoyed by the National Anthem to 'Vande Mataram'.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to introduce the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026 in the Rajya Sabha on Monday, the first day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament.
The proposed legislation seeks to make insulting or obstructing the singing of the national song ‘Vande Mataram’ a criminal offence by extending to it the same statutory protection that is currently accorded to the National Anthem, Jana Gana Mana.
