Artificially ripened mangoes seized

The city division of food and drug administration (FDA) raided the mango market at Shukrawar Peth last week and sized 500 kg of mangoes and pouches of calcium carbide used to artificially ripened fruits.

“This was the first action against the mango vendors this season and we conducted the raid after receiving information that carbide powder, which is dangerous for human consumption, was being used to ripen mangoes,” food safety officer Pradya Surase, who conducted the raid with three other FDA officers in Panghanti Chowk said.

He said that action would be taken against the vendors according to the newly amended Food Safety and Standard Act 2009.u00a0 u00a0
