Goalpara/Rangia: The toll in Assam in the current flood rose to 30 today with 14 bodies recovered from worst-affected Goalpara and Kamrup(Rural) districts even as relief and rescue work continued round-the-clock.
Six bodies were recovered from Bolbola and Krishnai areas of Goalpara taking the total death toll so far to 14 in the district, where army, NDRF and SDRF are conducting rescue operation, a senior district administration official said.
Another eight bodies were recovered from neighbouring Kamrup(Rural) district, where the toll rose to 10. Four others are still missing, Deputy Commissioner J Balaji said.
Goalpara district administration sources said 94 relief camps have been set up by the district administration and more than 90,000 people have taken shelter in them.
Assam Agriculture Minister Nilamoni Sen Deka and Forest Minister Rakibul Hussain have been deputed by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to review the prevailing situation in the district and coordinate the relief and rescue operations, an&nbsp;official spokesman said.
The ministers have announced that the state government would provide ex-gratia payment of Rs 3.5 lakh to the next of kin of those who lost their lives in the current floods.
In Kamrup(Rural) rescue operations were on and the situation was improving gradually with no rains since yesterday Balaji said road communication between Nagarberra and Hekra was affected as a concrete bridge was washed away yesterday.
Traffic along NH 37 has resumed but they were moving very slowly as several parts of it are still submerged, he added.
Situation in Guwahati, which falls in Kamrup(Metro) district, was improving slowly though the severely affected areas of Anil Nagar, Nabin Nagar, Tarun Nagar, Rajgarh besides Zoo Road in the heart of the city are still under water, a spokesman of the district administration said.
In Sonitpur, rain gobbled different parts of Brahmaputra dyke, while embankments got breached along Belsiri and Jiabhoroli rivers.
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi held an emergency meeting with senior officials during the day to take stock of the situation and directed the authorities concerned to take all-out measures to deal with it, CMO officials said.
Medicines have been dispatched to the flood-hit areas. Besides, water purifiers, hand pumps, mobile water treatment plants and pumping equipment have also been sent, a disaster management department official said.
In the worst-hit Goalpara, over 80,000 people are living in 84 shelter places. Goalpara Deputy Commissioner Preetom Saikia said a bridge over Krishnai on NH-37 was damaged and a team of engineers has been sent to restore it.
With rains letting up, rescue and relief operation are on and Air Force choppers have been pressed into service to rescue marooned people in Dudhnoi, Krishnai and Bolbola.
The state government has called in the Army, which along with NDRF and SDRF teams, have been engaged for rescue work. "However, majority of the people have come down on their own," Saikia said.
The flood situation in Kamrup Rural district turned grim with bodies of two women recovered from a paddy field in Boko area, police said. Vast tracts of land have been inundated in Chaygaon, Nagarberra, Goroimari and Boko as water of rivers Kulsi, Jaljanli, Singra, Kolohi and Brahmaputra gushed in following heavy rains in neighbouring Meghalaya, Kamrup Rural Deputy Commissioner J Balaji said.
Road communications along NH-37, flooded at various places, have been disrupted and a concrete bridge between Nagarbera and Hekra was washed away, he added.
Kamrup (Metro) Deputy Commissioner M Angamuthu called in the Army to assist the civil administration in rescuing and providing relief to the people in flood and landslide affected areas in and around the city. All government and private educational institutions in and around the city would remain closed for the third consecutive day tomorrow, an official release said.
The situation in Dhubri district, bordering Bangladesh, was grim with water level of the Brahmaputra river showing an upward trend. People were being moved to safer places, Dhubri Deputy Commissioner Kumud Kalita said. Yesterday, a child was killed and three others were hurt in landslides in Hatsingimari area of the district, he added.
Train services in central Assam's Morigaon district were also affected as rain water submerged rail tracks between Jagiroad and Dharamtul stations, a Northeast Frontier Railway spokesperson said.
