Former Indian skipper Mohammed Azharuddin will join the Congress on Thursday, a senior party leader said but gave no indication if the cricketer would contest the coming Lok Sabha polls.
"Azharuddin will formally join the Congress today," senior party leader Veerappa Moily, who is the in-charge of Andhra Pradesh in AICC, said.
Azharuddin, who had been banned from cricket in 2000, for his alleged involvement in the match-fixing scandal that had rocked the game internationally, had met Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, Moily and PCC chief Srinivas last month and expressed his desire to join the party.
