The Mallu morsels at Gunpowder in South Delhi will leave you gasping for breath Getting to Gunpowder, situated on the fourth floor in a suitably fashionable back alley in Hauz Khas, works up an appetite. Sadly, that's the only thing this restaurant, if you can call it that, manages to work up. For the only thing that's explosive are the prices. From the way the menu looks to the food to the service, unless you are a nau00efve firang (or want to be one), this joint u2013 that's a better word to describe the place u2013 is not worth visiting by a long shot.

Off target: Gunpowder's minimalist interiors</td></tr></tbody></table> Food We ordered deep-fried chicken (Rs 260) for starters and Iduki pork curry (Rs 300), Malabar parathas (Rs 45 each) and dosai (Rs 50 each) for the main course. The buttermilk came topped with a layer of chillies and curry leaves so thick that drinking it became a task. Thus, we had to settle for orange juice that was "only Minute Maid". Now maybe, Gunpowder wants to be a 'different' restaurant what with its 'no plastic no credit cards and no containers unless you get your own,' but serving the main course before the starters is absolutely indigestible. Though well-cooked, the curry had more pieces of fat than meat. If we were eating rice, the quantity of gravy would have been inadequate. The parathas seemed the pre-cooked variety, as did the dosai, which was more of an uttapam. And just as we were finishing our meal, we got served deep-fried chicken. We forgave the timing and ate it and were immediately sorry we did. Four very small pieces of chicken that were dry and hard on the outside and uncooked from inside obviously a case of immature cooking on high flame. We didn't care to sample the dessert, anyway there was only one on the menu. Thoroughly unsatisfied, it didn't help that four flights of stairs awaited us. By the time we got down, we were hungry again. Drinks None. So, there's disappointment there, too. Not that you'd like to down them here anyway. Ambience Aiming for a homely feel, the du00e9cor is simple. Smoking is permitted at the tables outside. The inside provides a view of the kitchen and a wholesale stench of fish and spices. The menu, written in illegible handwriting on notebooks you wish the owners had spent a little more money on, is tacky, and limited. All of which wouldn't be a problem if the food were any good.
