Taking a cue from Carlton Towers fire mishap, police step up efforts to detect building violations that can lead to similar disasters in future Taking cognisance of the Carlton Towers violations that resulted in increased casualties, the city Police Commissioner SM Bidri, has instructed all his jurisdictional police officers to take up Suo-motto inspection of the buildings.

Though residents have welcomed this move, experts feel that this could also lead to corrupt practices. The police officers could take advantage of the new rule and arm twist the building owners and the builders. Open violation Bidri said that many buildings in the city have not only violated the plans but also not adhered to the fire and safety measures. "The building owners should update with the stipulated norms and inform the same to the jurisdictional police officers before March 15," he said. "Reliable information has been received that there are a large number of buildings in the limits of the city, wherein deviations have been effected by the owners/leaseholders/occupants/associations of the occupants in the building, in gross violation of the building plan approved by Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP)," said Bidri. It has also come to notice, that in large number of buildings wherein open spaces were approved in certain floors/parts of the building were built up and used for commercial/residential purpose without approval of the authority concerned.
