Beed constable Lalita Salve moved high court this morning seeking permission for a sex change operation after her request was rejected by the Director General of Police. Arriving in a black hoodie jacket, with her face covered in a white handkerchief, Salve, 29, reached the Bombay HC today with her maternal uncle, Arjun Ujagare and her lawyer. Speaking exclusively to mid-day, Lalita revealed the name she has in mind after her sex reassignment surgery.

She has picked the name Lalit Kumar Salve . She also thanked Chief Minister Devendra Fadanavis for accepting her plea. Coming from rural Maharashtra, Salve, a constable posted in Majalgaon city police station (Beed), wanted to undergo sex reassignment surgery. When she wrote to DGP Satish Mathur, her request was denied. mid-day extensively reported about her struggle, which led Fadnavis to take cognisance, and he urged the DGP to make an exception in Salve's case by granting her permission.

On Thursday, Salve approached the court with Ujagare and filed a petition for the sex reassignment surgery. In her petition, Salve has cited medical grounds, a chromosome test showing that she has XY (male chromosomes) instead of XX (karyotype for female). She has also mentioned that it was her emotional inclination to become a straight male.
Salve told mid-day, "When my application was rejected outright by the DGP, I was extremely disheartened. I didn't know where to go, I felt like my right to live was rejected. But, the mid-day report not only helped me, it even got me the CM's approval. Salve expressed joy on reading of the CM's approval. "It's like a dream come true for me, I am really thankful to the CM. I am just hoping that the government pleader will keep the same contention in court and back my claims," Salve said.

Talking about the surgery Salve said, "I feel like my soul is confined inside a woman's body. Now, I feel I will be free soon," she said.

Ujagare said, "We come from an orthodox family, and sex reassignment surgery and all are out of the ordinary for people like us. We have never even thought about such things, leave alone talk about it. But, Lalita is just like a man, when she spoke her heart out to us, we had no option but to support her. We don't care about what the extended family and community speak about us, we just want to support her."
