A 22-year-old student tragically died while attempting to avoid a pothole near Budigere Cross on Kempegowda International Airport (KIAL) Road on Tuesday, police said.

The incident occurred under the jurisdiction of Avalahalli Traffic Police Station.

According to the news agency ANI, the driver of the tipper truck fled the scene but has since been identified, and authorities have confirmed that he will be arrested shortly.

This accident has intensified criticism of the State government over the worsening condition of Bengaluru’s roads. The growing number of potholes has become a major public concern.

While state ministers claim the issue is exaggerated and blame the previous BJP government for the current state of roads, opposition parties have targeted the Congress-led government for administrative failures.

As per ANI, BJP MP Tejasvi Surya recently urged Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to focus on improving road infrastructure. Surya accused the government of turning the pothole repairs into a scam, likening potholes to a “golden goose” that continuously generates funds but misuses public money and trust.

According to the news agency ANI, Surya stated, “The Deputy CM must prioritise how Bengaluru’s roads can be improved. If Delhi’s roads are bad, the people there hold their authorities accountable. Repeated filling of potholes in Karnataka is an ongoing scam. Potholes for the Congress government here are like a golden goose that keeps bringing them money. It’s unfortunate that public funds and trust are being eroded in this manner.”

On September 24, BJP MLA K Gopalaiah and party workers protested in front of Kanteerava Studios in Bengaluru, demanding better road conditions. BJP leader NL Narendra Babu also criticised the Congress government, calling Bengaluru a “pothole city.” He remarked, “Bengaluru was once known as a retired man’s paradise, IT City, and BT City. Today, it has become a pothole city. Who is responsible for this?”

Responding to the criticism earlier this month, Deputy CM DK Shivakumar blamed the BJP, saying, “The BJP will never be happy. These potholes originated during the BJP regime. They are responsible for the poor road administration in Karnataka.”
