Two police constables sustained injuries after a BMW car knocked them down after they tried halting the vehicle to halt during a nakabandi at Peddar Road around 1am on Monday. <img alt="Police accident" src="http://images.mid-day.com/2013/apr/Police-accident-1.jpg" style="width: 500px; height: 273px;" /> Anil Raut (28) drove his BMW past the barricades after police asked him to stop during a nakabandi at Peddar Road and knocked down two on-duty cops Following the incident, the driver abandoned the car near Breach Candy to board a taxi in order to evade arrest. But two beat marshals, who were giving chase to the vehicle, spotted him and nabbed him. The accused has been identified as Anil Raut (28), a Pune-based computer dealer, and has been booked for rash and negligent driving. <img alt="Police accident" src="http://images.mid-day.com/2013/apr/Police-accident-2.jpg" style="width: 500px; height: 253px;" /> While trying to make a getaway after the incident, Raut also banged another vehicle that had been stopped by the cops Prima facie, it is suspected that Raut was driving under the influence of alcohol, and according to the police, the fear of getting caught during the nakabandi led him to commit the act. He has been sent for a medical examination. The two injured constables, attached to Gamdevi police station, have been identified as Shyam Sunder Nikam and Madhurkar Shingade. He had arrived in the city on Sunday evening to meet a friend. Senior Police Inspector Pradeep Lolankar, Gamdevi police station, said, &ldquo;Raut had come to meet one of his friends and they had dinner at a hotel in Juhu where he also consumed alcohol. After the meal, they were on their way to Peddar Road when two policemen tried stopping the car during a nakbandi. The BMW also hit another car which was stopped by the police for routine inquiry.&rdquo; Trying to escape Immediately, after the incident the accused escaped from the spot and parked his car near Breach Candy. The beat marshals who were following the vehicle spotted his parked car and nabbed him. Lonandkar added, &ldquo;After parking his car, the accused was about to board a taxi in order to go unnoticed, but the cops arrested him from the spot.&rdquo; Police also said that Raut, who married recently, didn&rsquo;t stop his vehicle because he was with a female friend and did not want to get caught with her. Raut has been booked under sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of duty), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety), 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of Rs 50), and 134 (A) (abetment of such assault, if the assault committed) of the Indian Penal Code.
