Residents near the Lalbaug flyover woke up to a loud bang in the wee hours of the morning yesterday. When they looked out of their window, they saw that a private bus was lying on its side at the southbound entrance of the flyover. <img alt="" src="http://images.mid-day.com/2013/oct/Bus_3.jpg" style="width: 500px; height: 358px;" /> Accident spot: The extended portion on which the front wheel of the bus climbed and toppled over sideways At 2.55 am yesterday, the bus, belonging to Shree Krishna Travels, was headed to Mumbai Central from Wai, a town in Satara district. When it just started climbing the flyover, its front wheel climbed the stone-made extended portion made at the entrance. With its front wheel at a higher level than the rest of the bus, it tilted sideways, and fell on the road. The bus then went sliding ahead and banged an electric pole, before coming to a halt. <img alt="" src="http://images.mid-day.com/2013/oct/Flyover.jpg" style="width: 500px; height: 353px;" /> The noise caused by the accident woke up the residents of Fidvi Mansion that is right next to the structure. Residents came rushing out to rescue the people trapped inside. Vasant Patange, a resident of Fidvi Mansion said, &ldquo;The loud noise woke me up and from my balcony, I could see the fallen bus. It had blocked the entire lane and had fallen sideways, laying horizontally and blocking the entire road.&rdquo; The residents broke the glass windows and got the trapped people out of the bus. &ldquo;The police reached the spot in 25 minutes. But it was very difficult for them to carry these people as the entire road was blocked. There wasn&rsquo;t even space to carry a stretcher,&rdquo; said a resident. The five male passengers, and the driver were rushed to KEM Hospital. While the passengers have been discharged, the driver, Mann Singh Salunke, is still in the hospital. A police inspector from the Bhoiwada Traffic Police said, &ldquo;The driver was not drunk. The accident is probably due to negligence or an error of judgment.
