Gold ornaments worth Rs 50 lakh were allegedly stolen from a temple in Mandai area here on Wednesday morning, police said.

"We are investigating the case. Since the robber is caught on CCTV camera, we will find him very soon. We have alerted all police stations about this theft. As per the CCTV camera footage from the temple, the theft took place around 5 am.

The thief entered the window by breaking glass with the help of a cement brick which was near the temple itself. He entered the window and took away with two gold necklaces, two gold chains, one mangalsutra and one diamond necklace and escape through the same route,&nbsp;senior Police Inspector Hemant Bhat of Vishrambaug police station said.

He added, &ldquo;The incident came to light when the priest came at around 6.15 am to perform morning puja. Usually there is a watchman employed by the mandal but since he has gone to his hometown for last one month, there is no one to guard the temple. The window from which the thief entered is a glass window without any iron grills. My team of five officers including crime branch is investigating the case.&rdquo;
Anna Thorat, chairman of Akhil Mandai Mandal, which manages the temple, informed that the total weight of the stolen gold ornaments, which were adorning the idols of Lord Ganesh and Goddess Sharada, is 2,200 grams.
