Commissioner of Police Meeran Borwankar has instructed personnel across the 29 police stations in the city to conduct random checks in civil clothes on bhang and rave parties to ensure that no bhang is consumed during celebrations. The Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) of Crime Branch had declared on Monday that strict action would be taken against party organisers and participants who possess or consume bhang, a drink made from narcotic substance cannabis.The suspects will be charged under sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The ANC strength is merely 18, comprising 14 policemen, three sub-inspectors and one inspector rank officer. Considering that the cell is short-staffed, the police commissioner has asked the entire city police attached to the 29 police stations to keep a tab on the parties. The 7,000-strong city police force will enable the ANC to curb the illegal activities. Policemen in civil dress should keep watch in their particular jurisdictions, Borwankar has stated in her order. Police Inspector (ANC) Satish Deore said the suspects would be subjected to blood and urine tests. "If they test positive for narcotic substances they will be arrested," Deore said. "We also have our sniffer dog, Jay, who will be used to trace all narcotic substances hidden in public or private places. He has been particularly trained to detect substances like charas, afu and ganja," Deore said. Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajendra Dahale has appealed to the citizens to be alert and report any suspicious activity. "If citizens spot any suspicious activity during the parties, they can contact the ANC on 26208239 or Inspector Deore on his cell 9860910001," Dahale said.
