India saw 68,020 new Coronavirus cases in a span of 24 hours, the highest single-day rise so far this year, taking the country’s COVID-19 tally to above 1.20 crore, according to Union Health Ministry data updated on Monday. As many as 74,383 new cases were recorded in a span of 24 hours on October 11.

Over 7K active cases in Delhi
Delhi reported 1,904 new COVID-19 cases and six related deaths in the last 24 hours, taking that total number of cases to 6,59,619 in the national capital, as per the state health bulletin on Monday evening. In Delhi, which now has over 7,000 active cases — highest since September, private hospitals are running out of ICU beds, according to a report in NDTV. The Delhi government’s Corona app shows that four out of the five main private hospitals in the national capital have run out of beds with ventilators in ICU. However, ventilator beds are available at government hospitals that are preparing for the expected rise in demand due to the surge in cases.
10 times surge in 30 days
Beds with oxygen are also filling up fast in Bengaluru. A government-run hospital in the city had doubled its oxygen beds to 100 a week ago, and now, nearly 90 of them are occupied. “Karnataka is also seeing a steep surge. In 30 days, I can see almost 10 times more than in the initial days of March. We saw only 300 cases on March 1st, 2nd and 3rd. But by the end of March we are seeing almost 3,000 cases, predominantly in Bengaluru itself,” NDTV quoted Dr K Sudhakar, Health and Medical Education Minister as saying.
“This is great alarm for us, and we need to upscale all our precautionary measures.” India registered a steady increase for the 19th day in a row, the active cases have increased to 5,21,808, according to the data from the ministry.
291 new deaths
The death toll increased to 1,61,843 with 291 fatalities, the data updated at 8 am showed. The active caseload was at its lowest at 1,35,926 on February 12 comprising 1.25 per cent of the total infections.
The 291 new fatalities include 108 from Maharashtra, 69 from Punjab, 15 from Chhattisgarh, 12 each from Kerala and Karnataka, and 11 each from Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. The health ministry stressed that over 70 per cent of the deaths occurred due to comorbidities.
