A four months pregnant woman was allegedly assaulted by six people, including a CPI(M) functionary, over a land dispute following which she had to undergo an abortion here, police said on Thursday. The six people were arrested for assaulting Josna Sibi, 28, at a village in the district on January 28, they said.

A scuffle had broken out between her husband and neighbours over a boundary dispute during which Thambi, a CPI(M) branch secretary of Velamcode, kicked Sibi on her stomach, police said. A profusely bleeding Sibi was rushed to the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital where she had to undergo an abortion, they added.

A complaint was lodged by her in this connection on February 2. While one person was arrested on February 8, the others were apprehended today following an investigation. The accused were arrested on charges of unlawful assembly, rioting, voluntarily causing hurt, criminal trespass and wrongful restraint.
