The Delhi High Court on Tuesday directed the Election Commission of India (ECI) to ensure that election-related duties assigned to schoolteachers do not impose an "unbearable" burden on them, observing that teachers engaged in poll work after spending 6-8 hours in classrooms may undergo considerable stress. A Division Bench of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia passed the direction while hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) challenging the deployment of government school teachers for the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the national capital.

The Delhi High Court said that while there was no dispute regarding the ECI's constitutional authority to requisition teachers for election-related work, the mandate of Section 27 of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009, could not be overlooked.
