The Delhi Police have apprehended 25 Bangladeshi nationals, including five minors and ten women, for residing illegally in India for the past eight years without valid documents, reported the PTI.

Of the total detained, 23 individuals were traced to Kanpur Dehat district in Uttar Pradesh, following a coordinated operation triggered by intelligence inputs, police said.

Aishwarya Sharma, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police for the South East district, among the 25 arrested individuals, 13 were women and 12 were men who had been communicating with people in Bangladesh using an application, the ANI reported.

The initial breakthrough came after police intercepted two individuals in Delhi -- Hasan Sheikh (35) and Abdul Sheikh (37) -- both originally from Satkhira district in Bangladesh. Upon questioning, they revealed that several of their relatives and acquaintances were staying in Kanpur Dehat, according to the PTI.

A police team raided the location and detained 23 more persons, all of whom were found living in India without proper documentation.

According to officials, the individuals had been working in various informal sectors such as ragpicking, farm labour, and other casual daily-wage jobs.

The detainees have been shifted to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi's Temporary Detention Centre at Sarai Kale Khan, where legal procedures are underway prior to their deportation, police said, as per the PTI.

A senior police officer said that this is part of a larger crackdown on illegal immigration, adding that 235 Bangladeshi nationals have already been deported from southeast Delhi alone in 2025 so far.

"On interrogation, they revealed that several of their relatives and associates were living in Kanpur Dehat. Acting swiftly, the police team conducted a raid there and apprehended 23 more Bangladeshi nationals," a senior police officer said, as per the PTI.

All those arrested were found to be working as ragpickers, farm labourers, or engaged in casual occupations, the police said.

They have been shifted to the MCD Community Temporary Detention Centre in Sarai Kale Khan for further legal formalities before deportation, the officer added.

The police will soon deport the arrested suspects to Bangladesh, said an official on Thursday.
