Police examine evidence at the spot where the alleged encounter took place <img alt="" src="/imagedata/2011/may/Akram1.jpg" border="5" /> Soon after killing a police informer in April, Akram fled to Karwar to take shelter in the home of his in-laws. Even there he did not stay in the house fearing a police raid. He would move around in a car and would visit the house once during the day. Shahina, Akram's mother-in-law, has alleged that her son-in-law came to the house and was sitting in the car when he was taken. "He was about to have lunch when a team of police officers, in plain clothes, nabbed him and whisked away in the car," she claimed. "We thought he been taken into custody for questioning," Shahina said adding that the family came to know about his death only through the media. "To add to our woes, crime branch sleuths concocted the story of fake encounter in Bangalore and handed over the body to someone who is not even a family member. They say that no one from the family came to claim the body," she added. Refuting the allegation, Assistant Commissioner of Police B N Nyamegowda claimed that they received a tip off that Akram was on his way to eliminate a police informer. u00a0 "The police reached the spot and Akram opened fired on them. Despite several warnings, he refused to surrender. Left with no option, we had fire at him," he said. When questioned about why his body was not handed over to his family, an officer, who was part of the operation, said, "We had kept the body in the morgue and had informed his relatives. Since no one turned up, we asked one of the family acquaintances to receive the body and hand it over to his family in Shimoga." Meanwhile, an enquiry has been ordered in this regard, and officers who were part of the team that killed Akram have been asked to appear before the Additional District Magistrate.
