Pune’s Sassoon General Hospital’s former medical superintendent Dr Ajay Taware was arrested by police on Thursday in connection with a kidney transplant racket involving a well known private hospital, officials said.
Taware was arrested last year and is currently under police custody at Yerwada Central Jail after being accused of tampering with the blood samples of a 17-year-old boy who was accused of crashing a Porsche into a motorbike that killed two people in Pune’s Kalyani Nagar.
According to police the crime branch of the city has now taken him into custody in connection with the 2022 kidney transplant racket at the Ruby Hall Clinic, a leading private hospital, reported PTI.
Nikhil Pingale, Deputy Commissioner of Police, crime branch said, “We have taken Dr Ajay Taware into custody in the kidney racket case and he will be produced before the court today.”
Taware was accused of being the head of the Regional Authorisation Committee that approved kidney transplants in 2022.
In 2022 Pune police arrested 15 people, including the managing trustee of the Ruby Hall Clinic and some of its employees after a case was registered in May 2022. This case was lodged with accusation of illegal kidney transplant procedures that were conducted in March that year.
This case involves a woman from Kolhapur who was promised Rs 15 lakh, in exchange of her kidney. She fraudulently posed as the wife of the man who needed a transplant and donated her kidney in 2022 to a young woman patient. In turn, the mother of the young woman donated her kidney to the man.
Such swap of kidneys is carried out when two patients and their relatives cannot receive a kidney from their own kin because of a blood group mismatch.
Four days after undergoing the transplant surgery at the Ruby Hall Clinic, the woman revealed her real identity on March 29, 2022 after she had a dispute over money.
Dr Ajay Taware was the former head of the forensic medicine department in Sassoon General Hospital who was arrested for swapping blood samples of a 17-year-old boy involved in a fatal accident who was driving under the influence of alcohol with his mother to cover his crime. Dr Taware along with two other staff members were accused of manipulating this evidence. He is now under judicial custody at Yerwada Central Jail.
