Whether it was polygamy with the Pandavas, or the cheer haran, Draupadi is an immortal character of Indian mythology. Centuries after her dramatic ordeals, a modern day theatrical representation brings her to life while raising some basic questions about the fau00e7ade that every female flaunts today. The play 'Draupadi - We Are so Different Now' is the eloquent projection of travails of modern day women in India, which finds uncanny resemblances to the life of Draupadi that unfolded thousands of years ago.

The English play simply picks up the character of Draupadi from the Mahabharata and portrays how the character defies age and era. The story is about a modern girl, Maya, whose situation in life juxtaposes with that of Draupadi, and how she, when faced with the same dilemma, acts at her own will.
"The Indian mindset still thinks of Sita when it comes to the quintessential woman. However, in my opinion, it was Draupadi who stood for what she believed in, and defied the norms of society. The problems that she faced exist even today, with no definitive answers.
"Draupadi exists in every woman irrespective of country, religion and time frame. More so, she stood for the fact that problems exist within our own selves," stresses Shivani Pasrich, producer and actor.
Ensemble attempt
The play boasts of an ensemble cast including Shivani herself, along with Sanjit Bedi, Dilip Shankar and Charu Shankar. This apart, artistes like Anjoli Ela Menon, Ritu Kumar, Aman Nath, Shubha Mudgal, and Tina Johnson have lent their support to the play.

Hindustani classical singer Rekha Surya is the youngest disciple of Begum Akhtar, and has also trained under Bashir Khan and Girija Devi. She has performed in India, USA, Canada and Europe. Her aim: to bridge the gap between pure classical and mainstream music. "For this particular concert, I will be starting off with Faiz Ahmed Khan's poetry and then switching to Amir Khusrau. I will be singing in the Thumri Dadra style, which is so popular in the country," says Rekha.
