For every genuine rupee, they gave four in counterfeit. Commercial Street police caught them yesterday when they were about to receive genuine money from their UP collaborators. Jabeer Shariff (31) and Sridhar (21) are what the police call habitual offenders. They used to steal credit cards, book flight tickets online, and sell them cheap. They were caught and served a jail term. After their release, they got introduced to Ramesh, who prints saris, and hit upon the idea of printing counterfeit notes. On his instruction, they bought a brand new Canon colour copier. They allegedly stole another credit card and used it to make the purchase. They started taking photocopies of genuine notes and then duplicated them. They copied fake currency worth Rs 1.25 lakh and sent it to their associates in Lucknow. But luck ran out when two Afzal and Javed were trying to circulate the fake currency notes and were caught by the Lucknow police. Based on an interrogation report, the Lucknow police alerted their Karnataka counterparts. Armed with the information, Commercial Street police nabbed Jabeer and Sridhar while they were waiting for customers to circulate currency notes. Ramesh and Pulakeshi, who assisted Jabeer and Sridhar, were also arrested. The police seized a colour copier and stolen credit cards and some fake currency notes. They were produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody.
