A day trip to Ganpatipule in Maharashtra's Ratnagiri district turned tragic on Saturday after five tourists were <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/news/india-news/article/maharashtra-three-teenage-cousins-among-four-drown-at-nashiks-gangapur-dam-during-family-outing-23634823" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">swept away by strong sea currents</a> and are feared drowned, officials said.
The incident occurred on the morning of June 20 when a group of 19 tourists from Bidkin visited the popular coastal destination.
According to initial information, several members of the group entered the sea for swimming after arriving at Ganpatipule.
During the activity, a number of tourists encountered difficulties in the water as strong currents reportedly pulled them further into the sea.
<h2>Three rescued by local team</h2>
A <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/thane-drowning-20-year-old-drowns-while-swimming-in-water-filled-quarry-in-maharashtras-thane-23634356" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">local rescue team responded quickly</a> to the emergency and successfully rescued three individuals from the water.
However, five others were swept away before they could be brought to safety.
Officials fear the missing tourists may have drowned, although official confirmation is still awaited.
Rescue personnel have launched an extensive search operation along the coastline and in nearby waters to trace the missing individuals.
<h2>Teams on alert&nbsp;</h2>
Local authorities said efforts are continuing and teams remain on alert as the search enters a critical phase.
The missing persons have been identified as Aditya Santosh Raut (22), Aniket Bandu Hivarale (20), Anand Raju Narwade (20), Prem Deepak Adamane (19) and Yash Rameshwar Kamble (19).
