Bhoop Singh (49), a retired army hawaldar and bodyguard to a city-based goon, was beaten up on Tuesday by members of his own gang who accused him of leaking information to a rival. Singh was allegedly beaten up and robbed by his associates. The Wilson Garden police reached the spot and took Singh into custody, and confiscated his weapons. Singh told the police that he had retired in 2003 after serving for 24 years in the Army Supply Corps in Haryana. He had a licensed .32 revolver, which helped him land a job as a gunman. "I served as a gunman for many businessmen in Delhi and Andhra Pradesh before I was offered a job from Praveen alias Malayali Praveen a year back," Singh told the police. Sources revealed that Praveen, who runs an extortion and real estate racket in the neighbourhood, also provided Singh with a house in CKC Garden. "Many of Praveen associates lived with me, including Luis. All was well between us till Praveen contested the BBMP polls but lost to his rival Srinivas Pragal," said Singh. Sources added that despite knowing the enmity between Praveen and Pragal, Singh would often meet Pragal and also leak confidential information about Praveen's activities. Yesterday, when Pragal came to Singh's room to pay a visit, Luis and others were also present. Taking strong objection to Pragal's visit, Praveen sacked Singh and asked him to vacate the room immediately. Singh was paid the Rs 36,000 due to him on Tuesday. He was to vacate the room yesterday. Darshan, Praveen's brother, Luis and their associates barged into the room and began assaulting Singh to teach him a lesson. After the weapon went off accidentally, the gang fled the scene. They took Luis who sustained a bullet injury on his thigh. Singh later went to the station and filed a complaint and sought action against Darshan and others. Wilson Garden Inspector S S Kashi, who seized the weapon to ascertain whether it is licensed, said the investigations are underway.u00a0 "There is something fishy about the whole incident. We should be able to find out more as we proceed with the investigations," Kashi said. Malayali Praveen could not be contacted for comment despite repeated attempts.
