To put an end to the litigations against renowned painter MF Husain and ensure his early return to the country, the Centre is contemplating to approach the Supreme Court for expeditious disposal of all cases arising out of his controversial paintings.

Home Ministry sources said the cases filled across the country against Husain should be brought to a logical conclusion and this will enable the government to work out a focused strategy to bring him back.

The 94-year-old Husain, who has been living in exile for the last few years, wants to come back to India and had recently made an emotional appeal in this regard.

The Delhi High Court in May last year quashed some of the criminal proceedings against the nonagenarian painter, saying his paintings were an expression of creativity. Husain's lawyer Akhil Sibal said that it would be a good step if government takes pro-active steps to facilitate his early return.

"There are three cases against him in Delhi. But I am not sure how many are pending in different parts of the country. The government should bring amendments in law so that such persons like him should not get harassed," Sibal said.

Husain's paintings of Hindu gods and goddesses led to several cases being filled across the country. Husain has been in Dubai since 2006 after his paintings were repeatedly vandalised.
