The government is working on introducing vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) or cars communication technology to help prevent road accidents, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Thursday, reported the PTI.
Addressing a press conference after chairing the annual meeting of transport ministers from all states and Union Territories, Nitin Gadkari said that the new technology would allow vehicles to communicate with each other in real time.
How V2V technology will work
Under the V2V system, drivers will receive real-time alerts about the speed, location, acceleration, braking and presence of nearby vehicles, including those in blind spots. This will enable drivers to take timely action and avoid collisions.
Gadkari said a joint task force has been formed with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to implement the system. The DoT has agreed in principle to allocate 30 MHz spectrum in the 5.875–5.905 GHz band for V2V communication, according to the PTI.
Focus on reducing road fatalities
The minister said wireless technology would allow cars to communicate directly and form a key part of the government’s broader road safety strategy. He added that the government has been working to reduce road deaths through better road engineering, stricter enforcement of traffic laws, and higher penalties for violations.
“In India, nearly five lakh road accidents take place every year, leading to around 1.8 lakh deaths,” Gadkari said, as per the PTI.
He noted that about 66 per cent of fatalities involve people aged between 18 and 34.
Amendments to MV Act
Gadkari also announced that the government plans to introduce amendments to the Motor Vehicles Act during the upcoming Budget session of Parliament. The proposed 61 amendments aim to improve road safety, enhance ease of doing business, improve citizen services, simplify definitions and language, improve mobility, and align regulations with global standards, the news agency reported.
Key issues discussed at transport ministers’ meet
The meeting focused on several critical areas, including road safety, passenger convenience, public transport efficiency, ease of doing business and automobile regulations.
Discussions were also held on enhanced safety norms for buses, sleeper coaches and passenger vehicles, including bus body codes, Bharat NCAP (BNCAP) safety ratings, and the phased introduction of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), as per the PTI.
Other proposals included a points-based system to track traffic violations and the digital and automated issuance of permits for goods vehicles up to a specified gross vehicle weight.
