Even as the world feels the heat of global warming, nature lovers and conservationists have stepped up their efforts, leaving their footprints in as many places as possible. Closer home, a group has successfully cleaned up one of the most popular waterfalls near the city.
Located between Neral and Karjat, the Bhivpuri waterfall in Ashane village, like most waterfall spots in the state and country, had been choking with liquor and plastic bottles, wrappers and other waste. Hence, on Sunday, volunteers with city NGO Environment Life, which is running a 'waterfall clean-up drive', managed to remove one truckload of trash, weighing more than 2,000 kg, from in and around the waterfall.

mid-day had reported on June 26 how the broken pieces of alcohol bottles had been injuring farmers and villagers.
On a beautifying spree Last year, the same group had cleaned up eight waterfalls -- Anandwadi, Jummpatti and Tapalwadi in Nerul, Khopoli, Vasai, Badlapur and Pandavkada.

'No booze near falls' The NGO wants the government and tourism department to put signages giving detailed instructions and information about a ban on consumption of alcohol in and around the waterfall area.
Dharmesh Barai of Environment Life said, "It's just not done that the broken pieces of glass bottles dumped around waterfalls are injuring animals and local villagers; we want strict implementation of a ban on booze near such spots."

Along with Environment Life, students of Gurunanak College of Arts, Science and Commerce, a group of gram panchayat members, a cycling group and other small units came together to help to clean up the waterfall area.
