Gym-related injuries rise with the craze for well sculpted body

Bollywood diva Kareena Kapoor's svelte figure has millions of girls aspiring to be in her shoes and hunks want no less than six or eight pack abs. So, they get fired up to hit the weights at their gym everyday. Though fitness is on the top of the agenda, but a number health-freaks are falling prey to gym-related-injuries.

In their feverish rush to look fit, people avoid prescribed work schedule or sometimes overwork that cause injuries. The most common areas of such injuries are back, especially lower back region, shoulders and wrist.
Gaurav, GM, Ozone Spa Pvt Ltd, says "Frequently, people injure themselves in the gym because they fail to properly warm their bodies up in preparation for exercise, they don't stretch properly, they perform exercises with poor form, or they do exercises that are not recommended to begin with."

"The most important factor while working out is that one needs to be particular about the posture."

Youngsters want results overnight, which is mainly responsible for exercise-related injuries.u00a0 "They don't pay much attention to the gymming schedule prescribed by the trainers. Moreover, people go for rigorous exercise routine during initial phase. No wonder they land up in hospital with injuries" said Ajit Pratap Singh, a certified gym trainer.

Doctors confirm that cases of gym-related injuries are shooting up in the Capital.

Dr. Prateek Kumar Gupta, Sports Medicine Unit, Sir Gangaram Hospital, said "We get around 5 to 6 such cases every month."

Dr JS Arora, orthopaedician,u00a0 Moolchand Hospital, said most casesu00a0 were of backu00a0 injuries and cervical disc sprain.
