Zohra's marital life hit a discordant note after four months when it dawned upon her in-laws that her brother works for a UAE-based company and should give them a share of his salary.

The 24-year-old resident of Mongolpuri was married to Ashraf of Dwarka who works with a car showroom in the same area. Initially, it went fine between the two of them but then Zohra's in-laws came to know that her brother was "quite rich" as he works with a Gulf-based firm.u00a0
They allegedly started demanding money, gifts and animals for sacrifice. "They demanded clothes, gold, goat for sacrifice on Eid-ul-Zuha and started beating me over petty issues. They used to call my family members for dowry. The last call was made on August 25 when they threatened to kill me," claimed Zohra.
"Ashraf kicked me several times on my leg and stomach. I suffered severe injuries and started bleeding. Meanwhile, my brother Shaduddin Siddiqui reached my house. My leg was fractured by then. My brother called up the PCR for help," Zohra claimed.
She alleged that the cops, including Head Constable Ram Kishan, refused to take her to the hospital. Her brother took Zohra to the Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital and got her leg plastered.u00a0
Zohra's family claimed that the police was trying to shield Ashraf and his family, as they had registered a case of brawl only. "While an FIR under section 325 of IPC should have been lodged, the police filed a case of 107/151," they claimed.
A senior police officer confirmed that Zohra was assaulted and said they will soon lodge an FIR under section 325 of IPC. However, he said they are still waiting for the MLC report of the victim. "Anybody can show us a plaster. We act on concrete evidence. That's why we are waiting for the MLC," he said.
