The Indian Air Force (IAF) marked their 93rd anniversary with a grand celebration at the Hindon Air Force Station in Ghaziabad on Wednesday. On the occasion of Air Force Day, the skies came alive with breathtaking aerial displays, precision formations, and flypasts, which showcased India’s air power and technological progress.

The Indian Air Force was established on October 8, 1932, with six officers and 19 airmen trained by the Royal Air Force. It has evolved into the world's fourth-largest air force, embodying courage, precision, self-reliance and indomitable spirit.

The Indian Air Force Day honours this legacy, showcasing the force’s pivotal role in safeguarding India’s sovereignty and serving humanity. Moreover, this year’s celebration, themed “Aatmanirbhar Vayu Sena”, highlights India’s strides in defence indigenisation.

From its inception as an auxiliary under British rule to its transformation into the Bhartiya Vayu Sena in 1950, the Indian Air Force has scripted a saga of valour.

From its role in the 1947-48 Indo-Pak War and the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War to the Kargil War and Balakot airstrike, the Indian Air Force has been at the forefront of defending India’s sovereignty. Beyond combat, IAF has also earned global respect for its humanitarian missions, including flood rescues in Assam and relief operations in earthquake-hit Turkey in 2023.

Addressing the gathering on October 8, Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh, while praising the IAF’s unwavering readiness and technological advancement, hailed the force's operations. Referring to Operation Sindoor, launched in response to the Pahalgam terror attack, he said the mission demonstrated the Air Force’s “unseen, unstoppable, and unmatched” strength—neutralising enemy aircraft and bases deep inside hostile territory using indigenous systems and S-400 platforms.

Beyond its combat role, the Indian Air Force has also been proving to be a force for humanity. From rescuing stranded civilians during floods in Assam to providing relief in earthquake-hit Turkey in 2023, the IAF has been at the forefront of disaster response and international aid.

With a strength of over 1.7 lakh personnel and a steadily modernising fleet, IAF continues to inspire young Indians through its outreach and recruitment initiatives that promote careers in aviation and aerospace.

As fighter jets paint the sky in tricolour hues this October 8, Air Force Day stands as a tribute to the air warriors whose courage and commitment safeguard India’s skies and its spirit.
