Two people, including a woman, were killed in police firing during a drive to evict illegal settlers near Kaziranga National Park, on Monday morning. According to reports, many of the illegal settlers are allegedly Bangladeshis.
It may be recalled that the Gauhati High court, in October last year, had ordered evictions in the three villages of Bandardubi, Deosursang and Palkhowa near the park. The area, located about 200km east of Guwahati, falls in Nagaon district.
The eviction was supposed to take place on Wednesday, but the Nagaon district authorities advanced it. Reports further stated that over 1,000 security personnel were sent to Bandardubi and adjoining areas of Deosursang and Palkhowa for the eviction. Some Assamese families shifted before the drive, but a few others tried to prevent the eviction team from entering their area.
As things turned violent, the team had to resort to firing tear gas. Commotion followed, and two people lost their lives, falling into a water body. The deceased have been identified as Anjuma Khatun and Fakhruddin. A few others were injured.
