Union Minister and West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar arrived at the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday, following his detention by police last week, news agency ANI reported.
The West Bengal BJP President asserted that his detention constitutes a "breach" of the fundamental rights guaranteed by the constitution, which prompted his visit to the Calcutta High Court.
Speaking to reporters, Sukanta Majumdar stated that he had been detained thrice at different locations. The BJP MP specifically mentioned his detention on 28th June due to a "democratic agitation," which resulted in him spending the entire night at Lal Bazaar police station.
"In the last month, I was detained thrice from different locations. On 12th June, I was detained in Kalighat, on 20th June, it was when I was going to a person's residence, and on 28th June, for holding a democratic agitation. This constitutes a breach of an individual's fundamental rights. I have approached the Calcutta High Court to protect my democratic rights," he told reporters.
Furthermore, the BJP leader criticised the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government regarding the alleged gang rape case at a South Kolkata law college. He highlighted that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reportedly termed it a "minor" incident, which, according to Majumdar, demonstrates the government's lack of seriousness on the matter, reported ANI.
"You (TMC) are unable to keep a college campus safe. If a female student is raped on a college campus, it raises a big question about your education system and law and order... Mamata Banerjee herself has said that this is a minor incident. I think the West Bengal government is not serious about this matter," he said.
Earlier, Majumdar had already criticised the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government over the increasing incidents of crime against women in the state, following the alleged gang rape of a law student within her college premises in Kolkata.
Meanwhile speaking to ANI, Majumdar pointed out that two such incidents have occurred within the past eight months, the RG Kar rape and murder case, and the recent alleged rape of a student at a law college in South Kolkata.
"In a gap of eight months, two such incidents have occurred in West Bengal. One is RG Kar and the other is in Kasba, the town in South Calcutta Law College. The girl is nineteen years old and a first-year student. She was raped. Despite being a woman chief minister, such incidents continue to occur repeatedly," he stated.
"Here in Barrackpore, I went to the district a few months ago to meet that family; a disabled girl was raped and murdered. One incident after another is happening in West Bengal, and Mamata Banerjee is sitting quietly," Majumdar added.
Moreover, the West Bengal BJP President also accused the state government of destroying democracy and claimed that the police force has become a cadre of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC).
