At least 22 students were injured, including one seriously, after a <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/mumbai-chembur-school-bus-tragedy-11-year-old-boy-killed-four-injured-after-peepal-tree-crashes-onto-bus-23637655" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">private school bus overturned</a> into a roadside drain in Latur district of central Maharashtra on Wednesday morning, reported the PTI.
Police said the accident happened at around 9.30 am near the Sandol-Mahandol Road in Chakur tehsil when the bus was travelling to school with around 35 students on board.
According to preliminary information, the bus belonged to Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar Vidyalaya in Rachannawadi.
Police said the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to leave the road and overturn into a small roadside drain.
Local residents rushed to the scene and helped rescue the children before emergency services arrived.
<h2>Injured students taken to hospital</h2>
The injured students were taken to the Rural Hospital in Chakur for treatment.
Police officers, led by Inspector Balaji Bhande, reached the scene and supervised the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/news/india-news/article/maharashtra-rains-waste-mound-collapses-at-moshi-dump-yard-amid-heavy-rains-in-pune-several-feared-trapped-23638836" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">rescue operation</a>.
Ambulances were arranged to transport the injured children, while anxious parents gathered at both the accident site and the hospital.
<h2>One student referred for specialised treatment</h2>
Doctors said most of the injured students suffered minor injuries to their hands, legs and elbows.
Medical officer Dr Sangram Narwate said their condition was stable, the news agency reported.
However, one student who suffered a serious head injury was referred to a hospital in Latur city for further treatment.
<h2>Parents allege negligence</h2>
According to the PTI, parents alleged that the school's regular driver had handed the bus over to another driver before leaving town without informing the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/mumbai-rains-bmc-declares-holiday-for-all-schools-and-colleges-on-july-7-after-heavy-rain-alert-23638528" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">school management</a>.
They claimed the substitute driver lacked experience and that negligence led to the accident.
Several parents demanded strict action against both the driver and the school authorities.
The incident has also raised questions about the school's administration.
Newly appointed headmaster Satish Birajdar said he had not yet taken charge of the post.
Meanwhile, former headmaster Bhagwan Khadke said he had already been suspended by the institution over an unrelated matter.
The disagreement left parents questioning who was responsible for student safety.
<h2>Education department orders report</h2>
Chakur Block Education Officer Mandodari Wakade said schools are regularly instructed to follow student safety guidelines, as per the PTI.
She said monthly meetings are held to remind schools about safety procedures, but preliminary findings suggest the instructions may not have been followed in this case.
A detailed report will be submitted to senior officials, and action will be taken against anyone found responsible.
Police are continuing their <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/mumbai-best-bus-accident-best-bus-rolls-out-of-kurla-depot-in-mumbai-hits-two-parked-motorcycles-23638205" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">investigation into the cause of the accident</a>.
