A 25-year-old man was arrested for allegedly killing his mother after she did not wake up to cook a meal for him in Maharashtra's Dhule district, police said on Sunday, reported the PTI.
The incident took place on the night of May 24 at Wathode village in the Thalner area, an official said.
The deceased was identified as 65-year-old Tipabai Pawara. She prepared a fish meal for his son, Awlesh, and went off to sleep in their shanty. Attracted by the smell of fish, a stray dog entered the house and ruined the meal, the official said, according to the PTI.
Awlesh came home late at night and found the meal uneatable. The son, who was under the influence of alcohol, asked Tipabai to get up and cook fresh food for him, the police official said, adding that when Tipabai did not respond, her drunk son got angry and smashed a wooden stick on her head, the official said, citing their investigation, as per the PTI.
On Sunday morning, Awlesh woke up and saw his mother lying motionless. He called his relatives, who rushed to their place and found the elderly woman dead with a severe head injury.
After being alerted, police took Awlesh into custody.
A case of murder has been registered against the son at Thalner police station, the official said, adding that a further probe is underway.
Senior citizen found dead in well in Thane
Meanwhile, in an another incident, a 63-year-old man who went missing from his home was found dead in a well in Maharashtra's Thane district on Sunday, police said, the news agency reported.
The body of Hemant Jagannath Shelar was found floating in a well at Kopri village in Thane East around 7 am, following which the authorities were alerted, said Yasin Tadvi, chief of the civic disaster management cell of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), as per the PTI.
He said Shelar, a resident of Dombivli, had come to visit his brother at Kopri on Saturday evening and had been missing since last night.
The official said the body was retrieved from the well and sent to the district hospital.
The Kopri police have registered a case of accidental death, and a probe is underway.
