A 48-year-old man was mauled to death by a tiger in the forests of Maharashtra's Chandrapur district on Sunday, a forest official said, reported the PTI.


According to the PTI, the victim was identified as Prabhakar Ambadas Wethe, a resident of Dongargaon village in Sindewahi tehsil.


He had ventured into the forest to collect tendu leaves, the official said.


The man's body was discovered in the Sindewahi range, he said.

The deceased man's family was given an immediate assistance of Rs 25,000, the official said.

With this, nine persons have died in man-animal conflicts in the district so far this year, he said, adding that 25 persons were killed in such incidents in 2023, as per the PTI.

58-year-old man killed in tiger attack in Chandrapur

Meanwhile, in an another incident in mid-March, a 58-year-old man was killed by a Tiger recently in Maharashtra’s Chandrapur district, the PTI had earlier reported. 

The incident took place forest area number 494 in Ballarpur range. 

"The kin of the deceased have been given Rs 25,000 as initial relief. We have deployed eight camera traps to monitor the area. Personnel from the primary response team (PRT) have also been stationed there," the official said, as per the PTI.

A similar incident had taken place in November last year when another 53-year-old man was killed by a tiger, the news agency reported.

The man who was identified as Manohar Vani, a school bus driver from Babupeth area, was reportedly attacked in the morning when he had gone to pray at a Shani temple in compartment number 484 of Lohara beat in Chandrapur forest division in Maharashtra, he had said.

"Camera traps have been installed and a primary response team (PRT) has been deployed in the area. Forest teams will ask villagers not to go to the part of the forest where the incident took place," the official informed, as per the PTI.

While 24 deaths have been reported in man-animal conflicts in the region this year, the figure was 53 for last year, the official said, as per the PTI.
