Twelve people have lost their lives in the floods in Maharashtra’s Nanded district since August 14, an official said on Thursday. According to a preliminary damage report, 142 animals have also died, and crops spread over 4.47 lakh hectares across 1,299 villages have been destroyed, reported PTI.

Of the 12 deaths, nine were reported from Nanded district, while three were from the neighbouring state of Telangana. Additionally, 338 houses—both kuccha and pucca—have sustained damage due to the heavy rains and flooding.

The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has rescued 386 people from various flood-affected villages so far, the report said. Floodwaters entered 2,645 houses, impacting 11,227 residents, reported PTI.

Although the rainfall has now subsided, connectivity to several villages remains disrupted. In Himayatnagar, the bridge linking Sirpalli and Dolhari villages remains submerged. The administration managed to reach Sirpalli via boat and has set up a medical camp for residents, the report noted.

Mukhed taluka, the worst-affected region in the district, is now under control as of Thursday, the official informed.

Heavy rainfall in Nanded, along with inflows from Latur, Udgir, and parts of neighbouring Karnataka, has led to a continued rise in the water level of the Lendi dam, reported PTI.

Financial assistance has been disbursed to the families of five of the 12 people who died in the floods, the official added.

The body of Afreen Shaikh, a 30-year-old woman from Telangana who had been missing since August 20, was recovered, according to the latest update.

347 roads closed in Himachal Pradesh due to heavy rains; power and water supply disrupted

As many as 347 roads, including National Highway 305 (Aut to Sainj road), have been closed in Himachal Pradesh due to continuous rainfall over the past few days, officials said on Thursday.

According to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), Mandi district has been the worst affected, with 164 roads blocked, followed by 124 road closures in neighbouring Kullu district, PTI reported.

The heavy rains have also impacted essential services across the state. The SEOC reported that 281 power supply transformers and 145 water supply schemes are currently non-functional due to weather-related disruptions.

While monsoon activity remained within the normal range over the last 24 hours, moderate to heavy rainfall was recorded in several parts of the state, PTI reported. The local meteorological department has issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rain in isolated areas across two to five districts between August 23 and 26.

Una recorded the highest at 132.6 mm since Wednesday evening. Other areas with significant rainfall include Nangal Dam (101.2 mm), Naina Devi (54.6 mm), Sujanpur Tira (53 mm), Olinda (44 mm), Amb (42 mm), and Nadaun (41.5 mm).

Thunderstorm activity was reported from Kangra, Sundernagar, and Murari Devi, while gusty winds with speeds ranging from 44 to 50 kmph hit Reckong Peo and Neri, the meteorological department added.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation, and restoration work is underway in the affected areas.
