Two people were injured in a leopard attack after it entered a residential locality in Nashik district of Maharashtra.

The officials said that the leopard was later rescued.

According to the officials, the leopard entered Vanvihar Colony near the Parijat Nagar-Bhosala School area in Nashik, on Friday afternoon, leaving two people injured.

Residents panicked as the animal moved through the neighbourhood, prompting an immediate response from the authorities, the said.

Teams from the Nashik Forest Department, with assistance from the RESQ CT team, tracked and monitored the leopard. After several hours, officials successfully darted the animal at around 5:45 pm, officials said.

They said that the injured people were taken to hospital for treatment, and officials said their condition is stable. The forest department and RESQ CT team will later safely relocate the leopard after a thorough medical examination.

In an official statement, the Forest Department said that on November 14 at around 3:30 pm, a leopard was spotted in Gangasagar Colony, Kamgar Nagar area of Nashik city. As soon as information was received that the animal had attacked some residents, the Forest Department’s rescue team and Nashik City Police immediately rushed to the spot. Due to the huge crowd, noise, and chaos in the locality, the rescue operation became extremely challenging. The frightened leopard was running around in the residential area. During the operation, two forest guards, Santosh Bodke and Praveen Golait, were seriously injured after the leopard struck them with its paw. In addition, four to five citizens were also injured."

It said that after the police brought the crowd under control, the leopard was located in an open space behind a house, where the rescue team’s wildlife veterinarian tranquilised it using a dart gun. Once the team confirmed that the leopard was fully sedated, it was placed in a cage and shifted to the Wildlife Treatment Centre at Mhasrul.

"The rescue operation was successfully carried out through the joint efforts of officers and staff from the West Nashik Forest Division, Rescue Nashik Division, and Nashik City Police," the statement said.
