No Marathi certificate by Aug 15, no exemption: State warns taxi and auto drivers

Authorities have warned that drivers who fail to comply may face legal and penal action, while stressing that the goal is to improve communication and service quality rather than punish drivers

Non-Marathi-speaking auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers in Maharashtra will have to obtain a Marathi language proficiency certificate by August 15, failing which they may face legal and penal action, according to the state transport department, reported PTI.

The department has made it mandatory for such drivers to complete the 'Marathi Bhasha Samvad Pathyakram', a four-hour Marathi communication course, between June 1 and August 15, 2026, as per the news agency.
