Mamata Banerjee will be sworn in as the chief minister of West Bengal for the third time on May 5, her party announced on Monday. The newly elected Trinamool Congress MLAs unanimously elected Banerjee as the legislative party leader at a meeting, its secretary-general Partha Chatterjee said.

The legislators elected the speaker in the outgoing House, Biman Banerjee, as the pro-tem speaker in the new Assembly. “The newly elected members will take oath in the Assembly from May 6,” Chatterjee told reporters at the party headquarters.

11 women in Kerala assembly

For the first time since 2001, there will be double digit representation of women MLAs in the Kerala Assembly as 11 of them have been elected to the 140-member house. A total of 103 women contested in the polls, but only 11 made it into the assembly, as per the Election Commission figures.

The number of women representatives in the Assembly was just eight in the 2016 polls. There were 13 women MLAs in Kerala in 1996,as per the figures.

The DMK on Monday announced that the party’s newly elected MLAs will meet on May 4, where party chief M K Stalin is likely to be elected their Legislature Party Leader.

The BJP is likely to finalise its choice of chief ministerial nominee for Assam in a day or two as internal consultation within the party has begun amid a suspense over whether it will continue with incumbent chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal or bring in a new face. Sonowal and his powerful ministerial colleague Himanta Biswa Sarma are being seen as the two most obvious contenders for the top job. BJP sources said internal confabulation is on in the party, and its parliamentary board may soon name central observers to preside over the meeting of its newly elected party MLAs in Guwahati where they will pick their leader.
