Meet the Indian designer behind Michelle Obama's dress

Last year, Indian designer Bibhu Mohapatra designed a dress for Michelle Obama. Today, the man from Odisha is going places in the New York fashion circuit. In March this year, he worked with Odisha's artisan weavers and the collaboration culminated in a festival in Bhubaneshwar. The designer speaks to Vrushali Haldipur about the influence of his roots and his struggle before making it to the NY fashion scene
In 2012, US First Lady Michelle Obama wore a certain yellow print dress on Jay Leno’s The Tonight Show. It not only marked a milestone in a designer’s career, but also made everyone sit up and take notice. That dress sold out instantly, and the creator of that dress, Bibhu Mohapatra is now a rising star in the New York fashion scene.
