After beating, thrashing and humiliating a man last week for demanding salary at the behest of his employer last week, the Delhi Police targeted a minor on August 28. The cops at Ambedkar Nagar police station in southeast Delhi allegedly detained a juvenile in connection with a case of theft. When the family members came to know about it they reported the matter to the police. "The cops came to my house and took me in a private car at 3 pm on August 28. They took me to the police station and started beating me. They were continuously asking for some jewellery. I told them that I am a student of CA and don't know anything about any theft. But they continued beating me up. They handcuffed me and beat me with lathis. I shouted for help but in vain. They were forcing me to confess the crime. The tortured me till 5 pm before my parents called the PCR," said Prashant Bansal, the victim. Prashant's neighbour informed his family about the incident. "We went to the police station but the cops didn't listen to us. I even told them that Prashant is a minor, he is just 17. But the cops said that they are investigating the case and they will not release him till questioning completes. One of the policeman demanded Rs 25,000 as bribe to release Prashant. After one and a half hour we decided to call the PCR," said a family member of Prashant. On hearing about the atrocity committed against Prashant, senior police officials immediately transferred the Station House officer of Ambedkar Nagar Police station to the Police lines and suspended a constable. "When I came to know about the incident I immediately ordered to transfer the SHO and suspension of the constable who had arrested and tortured Prashant. An internal inquiry will be done in the case," said a senior police officer. "When I heard about it, I contacted senior police officials. Despite knowing that Prashant is a minor, the cops tortured him and detained him illegally," said Shahnawaz Khan, an NGO worker who helped secure Prashant's release. Atrocious On August 21st a man claimed that the cops detained him illegally in Govindpuri police station and thrashed him without any FIR. The matter is under investigation by the vigilance department of Delhi Police. That was also a case of theft and the police allegedly detained and beat up the accused.
