During the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament, as the INDIA bloc pushed for a discussion on the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process in Bihar, Union Minister and JD(U) MP Rajiv Ranjan (Lalan) Singh questioned how non-Indian nationals could be permitted to cast votes in India, reported news agency ANI.
Rajiv Ranjan (Lalan) Singh stated, "Who is running away from a discussion on it? If you want to suggest that a person who is not a citizen of this country should cast his or her vote, and then you parade around carrying a copy of the Constitution... They are speaking against the Constitution. What is written in the Constitution? Whoever is a citizen of this country has to provide evidence of their citizenship. How can a person who is not an Indian national cast their vote in India?"
Meanwhile, MoS and JD(U) MP Ram Nath Thakur affirmed that individuals possessing identification documents would not have their names removed from the voters' list, according to ANI.
Ram Nath Thakur commented, "The Opposition's role is to protest, but the government's role is to make decisions. Those who have identification documents will not have their names cut (from the voters' list). Those who do not have documents, their names will be cut."
However, on Monday, the inaugural day of the Parliament Monsoon Session, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla adjourned the Lower House until 12 noon amidst persistent sloganeering from Opposition MPs.
The Monsoon Session of Parliament commenced today, with the Opposition's INDIA bloc prepared to challenge the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Centre on several critical issues. These include the Pahalgam terror attack, Operation Sindoor, the Bihar Special Intensive Revision (SIR), and the Air India (AI) 171 crash.
This Monsoon Session is scheduled to run from 21 July to 21 August, comprising 21 sittings over 32 days.
Moreover, both Houses of Parliament will be adjourned from 12 August to 17 August to facilitate Independence Day celebrations, reconvening on 18 August.
Furthermore, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday set the ruling alliance's tone for an anticipated parliamentary discussion on Operation Sindoor, characterising this parliamentary sitting as a "Vijay Utsav" (celebration of victory) and expressing confidence that MPs would collectively articulate this sentiment.
"This Monsoon Session is a very proud session for the country. It is like a 'Vijay Utsav' (celebration of victory) for the nation. The world witnessed the capability of armed forces. They achieved their targets 100 per cent," he stated.
