The crime branch of the Mumbai Police have arrested two men for conning people at ATM centres, and withdrawing money from their accounts. The case came to light after the crime branch received several complaints from HDFC Bank regarding the fraud that was taking place at its ATM centres. "During investigations, we found that 16 victims had been cheated by the accused," said an officer with the crime branch.
The arrested accused have been identified as Satendra Shivbahadur Mishra, 32, and Bhupendra Shivbahadur Mishra, 35. Police sources said that the accused had adopted an unusual modus operandi. They would stand behind the target, attempting to withdraw cash at the ATM centre. They'd then surreptitiously look over the person's shoulder -- also known as shoulder surfing -- to get hold of their PIN details. Before the person could continue with the transaction, they'd tell them that the said machine wasn't working. If the unsuspecting customer left without ending the session on the ATM machine, the accused would quickly key in the PIN again, and withdraw cash from the account, before leaving, the officer said.
The accused have been conning people since September last year. Around 16 such cases were reported with HDFC bank, of which eight cases were registered at different police stations.

After cops examined CCTV footage and circulated the photos to all police stations, they received a tip-off about their whereabouts. The duo was arrested yesterday.
Both the accused are brothers and hail from Amethi, Uttar Pradesh. The crime branch has handed over the duo to the Kandivli Police, and investigations are on.
