Known for its religious and cultural activities throughout the year, the Navi Mumbai Tamil Sangam (NMTS) is in expansion mode. The additional space will be used to conduct many more community-oriented activities and get the entire Tamil community involved. The community centre is located at Sector 9A in Vashi, behind the Vashi bus depot and occupies 500 square metres.u00a0&ldquo;If all goes well, we may get the clearance from CIDCO for additional FSI which is expected to happen very soon,&rdquo; says N Mahadevan, managing trustee and one of NMTS&rsquo; active members. &ldquo;NMTS has been a crucial part of the satellite city for the past two decades. A lot of people from Navi Mumbai are actively involved in our programmes. So far we have tried to organise cultural and religious activities within the space provided to us by CIDCO, but then with the population of the community increasing, we felt the need to conduct more activities. Pic/Sameer Markande Asked why the expansion plan was not proposed sooner, considering that they have existed for 20 years in Navi Mumbai, Mahadevan says, &ldquo;The expansion cost of the Tamil Sangam building complex is expected to be above a crore. Therefore, we felt that a decision regarding the expansion plan must be taken only after collecting the required funds.&rdquo; The community centre will also have a revamped library with the latest titles added to their existing collection. Mahadevan says, &ldquo;So far we have a small library consisting of around 5,000 books most of which are on Tamil literature. We are planning to increase the number of these books to 25,000 once we have our new building complex. Besides, we would also be keen on having more Tamil language- related programmes in the future.&rdquo; The chairman of NMTS, K Rajagopalan, said that it has always been the aim of NMTS to get as many people involved in community activities and once the expansion takes place, the additional space will only make things better for them. At an awards function organised by a Navi Mumbai-based social organisation Shree Govardhani Saravajanik Seva Sanstha, the Tamil Sangam picked up the award for &lsquo;Best NGO&rsquo; in Navi Mumbai for their contribution to the society with their social and cultural activities. u00a0
