If onion traders are to be believed, the worst is finally over. The rates of onions, which have touched alarming heights of late, are slowly but steadily coming down, and it won&rsquo;t be long before the price stabilises, bringing relief to the common man and joy to kitchens across the state. <img alt="" src="http://images.mid-day.com/2013/oct/Onion_9.jpg" style="width: 500px; height: 348px;" /> On its way down: The wholesale price of the new crop of onions entering the market is as low as Rs 25 The price of the new crop of onions entering the wholesale market is as low as Rs 25. A new crop from places like Ahmednagar and Solapur has made its way into the market and there is also a steady flow of the crop from Karnataka. Nitin Parakh, trader from the Agricultural Produce and Marketing Committee (APMC) onion potato market, said that the good quality of onions is still selling for anything between Rs 40-45 a kg. &ldquo;This is the old crop of onions which still has a lot of demand in the market. Since the new crop does not have a long shelf life, demand for it is less, as is the price.&rdquo;u00a0 A fraction of the imported crop is still in the market, being sold for anything between Rs 32-35. &ldquo;The extreme shortage in onions had prompted traders to export onions from China, Egypt and Pakistan a fortnight ago. The Egypt and China crops are still available in the market but traders say that the demand for it is extremely low because of its taste. Imported onions in most cases are too large, as a result of which retailers prefer not to buy them. In the retail market however the prices of onions are still hovering around Rs 50 a kilo. Tulsidas Chowdhary, a retailer from MAFCO retail vegetable market in Vashi, says that the new crop of onions is selling at Rs 50, while the old crop is going for Rs 55. &ldquo;Compared to the last few days when the price of onions in the retail market had gone up to Rs 70-75 a kg, the rates have come down and this is surely an indication that the rate of the commodity is on the downslide,&rdquo; added Chowdhary.
